Windows Update on Windows 7 stuck at 0%

Email Print

So far I've taken five calls this morning alone about Windows 7 computers hanging after rebooting and installing updates.

The issue seems to lie with a particular update that Microsoft pushed out numbered KB982018, to do with updating parts of the USB drivers.

This blog post will show you easily how to fix it.

Windows Updates, stuck at 0%The patch that Microsoft have released is to do with computers and Advanced Format Disks but is being pushed out to most, if not all, platforms.

You will know you have a problem if your computer restarts and gets no further than the screen shown right.

Here's what to do:

  1. Wait for 15 minutes before assuming you've got the problem. Some updates take a while to install.
  2. If you've been waiting for more than 15 minutes, hold in the power button for 10 seconds, or until your computer goes off.
  3. Switch it back on. When it starts again it should say "reverting changes" - if not, start again at step 1 and wait another 15 minutes to be sure the updates have frozen.
  4. When the updates have been rolled back, download the relevant package direct from the Microsoft site here:

All supported x64-based versions of Windows Server 2008 R2

  5. Install the update package as normal, and when it's finished restart your computer.

Providing the patch is installed manually, your PC will exhibit no further problems. Happy computing!
